Sacrament of the Lord's Supper
Topic: Communion Passage: 1 Corinthians 11:23–11:26
1 Cor 10:14-16
The Supper is communion with Jesus. He is present with us as we partake.
In the Supper, Jesus is present spiritually.
Koinonia means participating, fellowship and communion with, and in this case, it is with Jesus.
‘the body of Christ is given to us in the Supper spiritually, because the secret virtue of the Spirit makes things which are widely separated by space to be united with each other, and accordingly causes life from the flesh of Christ to reach us from heaven.’ John Calvin
In the Supper, the presence of Jesus is mysterious.
1 Corinthians 11:27-30
In the Supper, the presence of Jesus is experienced only by faith.
“On the part of God, there is the Holy Spirit, who offers the Body and Blood of Christ to us. On our part there must also be a means employed, or else when he offers, we will not be able to receive. Therefore there must be faith in our souls to receive what the Holy Spirit offers, to receive the heavenly food of the Body and Blood of Christ. Thus faith and the Holy Spirit are the two means employed in this spiritual and heavenly conjunction.”
Every time you participate in this Sacrament you have access to Jesus in a unique way.
“You do not get any different Christ in the Lord’s Supper than you get in the preaching of the Word; you do not get a better Christ in the Lord’s Supper than in the preaching of the Word; but you may get the same Christ better.” Robert Bruce
