You Gotta Serve Somebody
Topic: Romans Passage: Romans 6:14–6:18
You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance You may be the heavyweight champion of the world You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls
But you're gonna have to serve somebody yes,
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
15 Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace?
Vs. 16: Slaves to sin or slaves of obedience
Vs. 17-18: Slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness
Vs. 20-22: Slaves to sin or slaves to God
“Whatever controls us is our lord. The person who seeks power is controlled by power. The person who seeks acceptance is controlled by acceptance. We do not control ourselves. We are controlled by the lord of our lives.” Rebecca Manley Pippert.
“Free will I have often heard of, but I have never seen it. I have met with will, and plenty of it, but it has either been led captive by sin or held in blessed bonds of grace.” Spurgeon
“So, the choice is not, ‘Should I give up my freedom so that I can submit to God?’
Rather, it is, ‘Should I serve sin or should I serve God?’” Douglas Moo.
“You can still be a slave experientially, even when you are no longer a slave legally…
Whatever you may feel, whatever your experience may be, God tells us here, through His Word, that if we are in Christ we are no longer in Adam, we are no longer under the reign and rule of sin…And if I fall into sin, as I do, it is simply because I do not realize who I am…Realize it! Reckon it!” Martyn Lloyd-Jones
16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
God’s grace brings power for whole-hearted obedience.
Paul give thanks to God because He is the One who saves
There is a standard of teaching important for us to know.
The fruit of the truth that impacts the heart is obedience and life change.
Duty becomes delight.
