What is a tithe and how is it different from an offering?

The word, "tithe" literally means tenth or 10%. Thus, giving your tithe as an act of worship is to present to the Lord the first 10% of your income. An offering is anything you give above and beyond the 10%.

Why do we tithe?

Well, because the Bible says to. The purpose of tithing is to teach you always that the Lord God has first place in your lives. (Deuteronomy 14:22-23) Tithing is a reminder that God is the owner and supplier of everything we have (2 Cor. 9:10 & Psalm 50:10). It is also God's personal invitation to an outpouring of His blessing in your life.
In Malachi 3:10 God say this: "Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need." God tells us to put Him to the test. See if you can out-give God. Jesus also tells us in Matthew 6:21 "For where your treasue is, there your heart will be also."
Practically speaking, without the tithes and offerings of God's people, the worship and work of a particular church would be greatly hindered and limited. These givings enable a church to cultivate worship, discipleship and mission through necessary staff, ministry models and facilities. See the following passages for further insight (Acts 4:32-35; 1 Cor. 9:14; Gal. 6:6; Rom. 15:26; 1 Cor. 16:1-2; Acts 11:27-30).
Our budget is set up to reflect the ministry calling and aims of our church. As you faithfully give, you enable us to increase our impact locally and globally to the praise of His glorious grace.

Do you trust Him?

If you find yourself fighting or struggling against the tithe, God's Word calls you to examine your hearts. "For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also." (Matthew 6:21). See to faithfully tithe and watch what God does in and through your life. I Timothy 6:17-19 instructs us to not set our hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God...storing up treasure for the future. See also 1 Timothy 6:17-19 & Acts 20:35.

Can I give more than 10%?

One tenth is a starting place for all of us, but we are not under law, we have a better covenant. God's love has been poured into our hearts. As God works in your heart, you wil find the amount you give to His work increasing. Jesus in Luke 21:2-4 tells of the widow who gave all she had. We are instructed to give 10% as a tithe, what are you willing to give the One who gave His life for you.
